Australian and Chinese language navy officers have held safety talks for the primary time in about 4 years as Canberra works to defrost its relationship with Beijing.
Australian Protection Power officers hosted a delegation from the Individuals’s Liberation Military in Canberra for a half-day assembly on Wednesday.
It was the primary formal assembly of protection officers since 2019 after Protection Minister Richard Marles and his Chinese language counterpart Common Wei Feng agreed to reinstate the protection co-ordination dialogue in November.
“The dialogue was performed in an expert environment with each side exchanging views on regional safety points,” an Australian protection division spokesperson mentioned.
China’s Nationwide Protection Ministry mentioned in an announcement: “Negotiations have additional enhanced mutual understanding, which is conducive to the wholesome and secure improvement of the connection between the 2 militaries”.
Though the connection between Canberra and Beijing has been bettering, China doubled down in its criticism of Australia’s plans to get nuclear-powered submarines after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese introduced the pathway to the acquisition final week.
