Essendon has appointed Zach Merrett as captain, three years after he was dumped from the management group.
Merrett takes over from Dyson Heppell, who surprisingly stepped down from the role regardless of being endorsed by new coach Brad Scott.

The 27-year-old will likely be supported by vice-captain Andrew McGrath.
