HMAS Canberra deployed to Vanuatu in wake of cyclones

The federal authorities has deployed HMAS Canberra to Vanuatu to provide support to the country following Tropical Cyclones Judy and Kevin.

The Canberra will sail from Sydney after a request from Vanuatu’s authorities.

“HMAS Canberra has a major capability to offer ship-to-shore connections through its touchdown craft and three embarked Australian Military CH-47 helicopters, contemporary water and has its personal hospital services,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated in an announcement on Sunday evening .

“The ADF personnel on board carry latest expertise from different aid efforts within the area over the previous two years and Protection is proud to help a member of the Pacific household.”

The deployment follows two RAAF plane which have already reached Vanuatu’s capital of Port Vila.

“Our shut partnership with Vanuatu means we’ve been in a position to mobilize help shortly and contribute to the federal government of Vanuatu’s speedy requests following Tropical Cyclones Judy and Kevin,” International Minister Penny Wong stated in an announcement.

“With HMAS Canberra we’re offering extra humanitarian provides and much-needed logistical help. This reveals our continued dedication to the Pacific household.”
