Israel minister visits contested holy site

Israel’s far-right nationwide safety minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has visited the compound that homes the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, a transfer condemned by Palestinians as provocative and regardless of warnings it may result in violence.

The Ynet information web site on Tuesday carried photos of Ben-Gvir touring the location beneath heavy safety. The compound is Islam’s third holiest web site after Mecca and Medina and Judaism’s most sacred, a vestige of two historic temples of the religion.

Israel’s opposition chief and former prime minister Yair Lapid had warned that such a go to by Ben-Gvir would spark violence.

Solely Muslim worship is allowed on the web site, and there was no indication that Ben-Gvir had prayed throughout his go to.

The Palestinian Overseas Ministry mentioned it “strongly condemns the storming of Al-Aqsa mosque by the extremist minister Ben-Gvir and views it as an unprecedented provocation and a harmful escalation of the battle”.

Ben-Gvir was sworn in final week as a part of a brand new authorities led by Benjamin Netanyahu that features far-right and non secular events.

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli troopers shot and killed a Palestinian teenager throughout a conflict within the occupied West Financial institution, Palestinian well being officers and witnesses mentioned. There was no instant touch upon the incident from the Israeli military.
