Lord Howe Island closed to travellers due to myrtle rust spores

Nearly all of world heritage-listed Lord Howe Island, within the Tasman sea about 700km northeast of Sydney, has been quickly shut down because of the escalating threat of the extremely transferable airborne fungus.

The closure, introduced by the Lord Howe Island Board on Wednesday, is prone to final till the outbreak is managed.

“Efficient instantly, the LHI Everlasting Park Protect (PPP) is quickly closed to all non-essential guests,” the board wrote on Fb.

Since its discovery on the NSW Central Coast 12 years in the past, the invasive myrtle fungus — recognized by its brilliant yellow spots — has unfold throughout the Australian panorama and now prospers in bushland reserves, backyards, industrial operations, nature strips and parklands.
