VicPol charges woman over alleged ‘hijab attack’

A Melbourne teenager was racially and bodily abused and had her hijab pulled by a girl on a bus after stepping in to defend two younger ladies, police allege.

The 17-year-old lady was catching a bus from Monash College, in Melbourne’s southeast, to Glen Waverley station when she noticed a 50-year-old lady allegedly abusing two younger ladies about 4:30pm on March 10.

The teenager stepped in to assist the ladies and the girl allegedly slapped her within the face and tried to tug her hijab off, earlier than kicking her as she tried to get off the bus, a police spokeswoman informed AAP.

The lady reported the incident to the police and stated officers informed her they acknowledged the girl from one other racist assault on a Protecting Providers officer two days prior.

‘I used to be scared to demise’

The Mount Waverley lady was charged with widespread legislation assault, assault by kicking, three counts of illegal assault, committing an indictable offense while on bail and utilizing obscene language in a public place.

Islamophobia Register Australia government director Sharara Attai condemned the assault and urged bystanders to step in and assist victims of racial abuse.

‘Nobody stepped in to assist’

“‘The bus was reportedly full of individuals and but nobody stepped in to assist a 17-year-old youngster who was being viciously attacked and focused due to her Islamic religion,” Ms Attai stated.

“We urge bystanders to step in the place it’s secure to take action, to name on key figures within the related state of affairs for help, similar to drivers and shopkeepers, in addition to in fact police and safety guards.

“This sort of racism and bigotry has no place in our society and we have to ship a robust message that it’s going to not be tolerated.”
