Wombat and possum-like fossils fill evolutionary gap

Dwell

An early relative of the wombat with a strong chew and a possum with massive enamel have been found in central Australia, serving to to unravel an evolutionary puzzle.

The fossils, deposited about 25 million years in the past within the late Oligocene, had been discovered by Flinders College paleontologists in 2014, 2020 and 2022 close to the small Arrernte township of Pwerte Marnte Marnte within the southern Northern Territory.

They supply key insights into the weight loss program and life-style of long-extinct marsupials that lived in a once-lush forest panorama dominated by megafauna, together with big flightless birds and crocodiles.

“These curious beasts are members of marsupial lineages that went extinct way back, leaving no trendy descendants,” PhD candidate Arthur Crichton stated.

“Studying about these animals helps put the wombat and possum teams that survive at the moment in a broader evolutionary context.”

The newly described possum species, known as Chunia pledgei, had enamel with a number of bladed cusps that had been positioned facet by facet.

“We all know that these animals had a lemur-like quick face, with significantly massive forward-facing eyes, however till extra full skeletal materials is thought their ecology will seemingly stay mysterious,” Mr Crichton stated.

The brand new species is called after South Australian paleontologist Neville Pledge, who found fossils in rocks east of Lake Eyre.

The opposite new species, known as Mukupirna fortidentata, was a bigger distant relative of wombats and had jaws and enamel formed to counsel a strong chew with massive and steeply upturned incisors.

Weighing about 50 kilograms, it was among the many largest marsupials of its time.

This species is regarded as a part of an extinct evolutionary lineage, Mukupirnidae, that diverged from a typical ancestor with wombats greater than 25 million years in the past.

“Whereas wombats had been very profitable over the succeeding interval, the mukupirnids appear to have gone extinct someday earlier than the top of the late Oligocene,” paleontologist Gavin Prideaux stated.

“That is an interval in Australia’s local weather that noticed a gentle improve in aridity and seasonally restricted rainfall, reshaping the setting.”

Proof of the traditional wombat was compiled from 35 specimens from completely different people, together with a partial cranium and a number of other decrease jaws.
